Joseph A Turba, Jr:

CLASS OF 1968
Pittsburgh, PA

Joseph A's Story

After graduation, I spent the next two years taking computer programming at Connelley. After Connelley, I enlisted in the Marine Corps and was part of the last "Pittsburgh Pirates Platoon". The platoon was sworn in at center field of Three RIvers Stadium. I spent the next seven (7) years in the Marine Corps. Even though I had Computer Programming background, the Marine Corps made me a Radio/Telegraph Operator. I spent 12 weeks in radio school (of which 4 weeks I learned how to take Morse Code). I was a member of Radio/Telegraph Class RT 27, which completed the course in April of 1971. The Radio Class in front of us went to VietNam and our class went to Okinowa. I was in Okinowa for thirteen months. I missed the '71 World Series. Then I was transferred to Camp Lejeune. While at Camp Lejeune I was fortunate to go to the Mediterranean twice. The first trip I was able to see Malaga, Spain, Athens, Greece, Cannes and Nice, France and Barcelona, Spain. The second time to the Mediterranean, our ship was on it's way back to the states when the Yom Kippur War broke out in October 1973. I was lucky to be stationed at Camp Darby just outside of Lorveno, Italy. We were there about five weeks. I was able to visit Rome twice. I wanted to see where my Dad fought with the 85th Division during World War II. And, I had the chance to walk up the Leanin...Expand for more

I am one of a few vendors that worked at Forbes Fields, Pitt Stadium, Three Rivers Stadium and now PNC Park. AS OF DEC 28, 2012 I RETIRED FROM THE PITTSBURGH SCHOOL DISTRICT AS AN ACCOUNT CLERK. I SPENT 29 YEARS WITH THE DISTRICT I KEEP MYSELF BUSY BY BELONGING TO FOUR DIFFERANT DETACHMENTS OF THE MARINE CORPS LEAGUE OF PENNSYLVANIA. MY HOME DETACHMENT IS THE SOUTH HILLS PITTSBURGH 726 DETACHEMENT. August 26, 2019 I lost my wife of 35 years to dementia. She went in the hospital the last weekend of April 2019.
